Duncan, Alastair and Georges de Bartha, Galle Furniture
Duncan, Alastair and Georges de Bartha
Galle Furniture
Suffolk, UK / New York, Antique Collector's Club, 2012. Hardcover. brown cloth boards. 368 pgs w/ bw & color illustrations. grey, pictorial dustjacket. "Emille Gallé was one of the leading figures of the Art Nouveau movement in France, and founder of the famous École de Nancy. A polymath and committed social activist, he was best known for his glasswork and faience. Furniture became his third discipline after experimenting with the manufacture of wooden bases on which he could mount his glass vases. Gallé ardently followed the French tradition of furniture decoration known as marqueterie. His work is characterized by its meticulous decorative veneers, stained with subtle organic dyes; its panels inlaid with stunningly intricate country scenes and flowers. This book outlines all of Galle's major works of furniture, from the unique pieces that were designed for an exclusive clientele, to those displayed between 1889 and 1904 at the annual Paris Salons and two World Expositions. The recent emergence of many of his objets de luxe enables the reader to understand many of his pieces for the first time.."--Publisher description. New/Sealed .

Gilbert, Christopher and Tessa Murdoch, John Channon and Brass-Inlaid Furniture, 1730-1760
Gilbert, Christopher and Tessa Murdoch
John Channon and Brass-Inlaid Furniture, 1730-1760
New Haven, Connecticut, Yale University / Leeds City Art Galleries / Victoria and Albert Museum, 1993. Hardcover. black cloth boards w/ gilt spine printing. 164 pgs w/ bw & color illustrations. glossy, green pictorial dustjacket. content as follows: Amongst the most ostentatiously splendid masterpieces of English furniture are a group embellished with engraved brass inlay and rich ormolu mounts. Dating from about 1730-60, made of exotic timbers and many displaying highly flamboyant Rococo personalities, they have traditionally been attributed to the workshops of John Channon, one of Chippendale's neighbours and rivals in St Martin's Lane. However, new research indicates that there were at least five London cabinet makers specializing in brass-inlaid furniture at the time, and six leading furniture historians have combined forces with Christopher Gilbert and Tessa Murdoch to reinvestigate the whole question of authorship, and to look again at the origins of the phenomenon of brass-inlaid furniture. The contributors to this handsomely illustrated volume have discovered fresh information about the Channon family, and place English brass-inlaid furniture firmly within the context of French and German traditions. They trace continental design sources for decorative elements, illuminate the structure of the London cabinet-making trade, and identify and attribute different workshop groups to various previously shadowy firms, several of whom have German links. For the first time all recorded and traceable examples of English brass-inlaid furniture dating from the reign of George Il are discussed and illustrated with many examples in colour. Publication will coincide with an exhibition of brass-inlaid furniture by Channon and his circle at Temple Newsam House in Leeds, opening on 20 October 1993 and moving to the Victoria and Albert Museum on 16 February 1994, for which this book serves as the catalogue. VG+ pgs lightly toned. dustjacket scuffed & scratched w/ edge-wear; toning to interior.

Kenny, Peter M., Honore Lannuier: Cabinetmaker from Paris
Kenny, Peter M.
Honore Lannuier: Cabinetmaker from Paris
New York, Metropolian Museum of Art, 1998. Hardcover. maroon cloth boards. book vxiii, 253 pgs w/ bw & color illustrations. grey, pictorial dustjacket w/ gilt printing. Although his brief but productive career as a cabinetmaker in New York lasted a mere sixteen years, the French-born maitre ebeniste Charles-Honore Lannuier (1779-1819) was a leading figure in the development of a distinctive and highly refined style of furniture in the Late Federal period. A contemporary of the renowned master Duncan Phyfe, Lannuier, like him, made fashionable gilded card tables, marble-topped pier tables, bedsteads, and seating furniture for wealthy clients numbering among the mercantile and social elite of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Richmond, and Savannah. This volume, which complements the exhibition "Honore Lannuier, Parisian Cabinetmaker in Federal New York" held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in spring 1998, represents the most complete study of Lannuier's life and work published to date.--Publisher.
